I guess the family business is medicine.  My dad and my sister are doctors.  My mother has her nursing degree (my folks met while teaching a sex education course, go figure).  My grandmother was a WWII army nurse.  My great grandmother was a traditional folk healer.  

In any case, I started practicing herbal medicine about twenty years ago.  My focus has mostly been western folk and hermetic traditions, but I had been introduced to a decent amount of TCM, Ayurveda, and other indigenous healing systems as well.  So, being an unabashedly devoted plant person, last year was my time to take the plunge and apply to the MSTCM program, and now I'm in my third trimester.

I found two articles that address the Alkaline Diet from two different perspectives.  The conclusion of the first article is that " There may be some value in considering an alkaline diet in reducing morbidity and mortality from chronic diseases and further studies are warranted in this area of medicine ." Check that article out here . The other article doesn't find any benefit to the Alkaline Diet, beyond the fact that it suggests eating a diet high in fruits and vegetables, and low in processed foods.  It's conclusion states " Your body tightly regulates blood pH levels. In healthy people, diet doesn’t significantly affect blood pH — but it can change urine pH."   That article is here . I haven't given the diet much thought beyond the generalized suggestions mentioned in the latter article.  Obviously can't hurt too much to eat a diet high in vitamin-rich whole plant foods.  I did notice that lemon is a 9 on the pH scale - and being of Greek ...

Week X: Chemistry

Investigate the chemicals... I've got a shmorgishborg of products underneath the sink, a spectrum of chemicals ranging from the benign to the outright toxic.  I'd say I prefer to use more natural products, but when it comes down to it, I kind of just use what's around and try not to overthink it.  I think it's OK to be mindful of the cleaners you're using and to "use with caution" when necessary.  For the most part, I wear vinyl gloves or something similar when I do the deep cleaning, and try to remember to crack a window for ventilation.  On the safer side of things I have vinegar and castile soap, and on the more toxic side things like bleach, Kaboom (have no idea what this is but most likely some sort of bleach compound), stainless steel cleaner (contains petroleum distillates), and a product called CLR (propylene glycol ethers and other solvents).
